The Nutcracker and the Four Realms | Great Potential, But Will They Deliver?

“All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.”

From the creators of Beauty and the Beast and Maleficent, Disney brings us yet another film adaptation of a classic tripping on acid. However, this acid trip has Morgan Freeman! So I’ll see it. I’d watch a fishing trip on TV if it was Morgan Freeman narrating.

I am mildly concerned about the score being conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, seeing that the Nutcracker was composed by Tchaikovsky. I wonder how much of the familiar and magical original composition will be in the film? What next? A cartoon version of Swan Lake? Oh, wait.

If the costume design is any indication of the quality of the film, we’re in for a treat. The intricate detail of the gowns is enough to make any little girl dream of being a princess. The three brief appearances of ballet dancers in the trailer also gives us hope that there will be some inclusion of the original classic in the film. However, this hope is rather fleeting, since the trailer seems to be focused more on the new plot they created.

So if you have a problem of Christmas immediately after Halloween, you better brace yourselves because The Nutcracker and the Four Realms hits theaters November 2, 2018! Hopefully, this movie won’t be a nightmare before Christmas.
