TEMPE, AZ — Arizona’s own Chris Labadie is bringing his latest film, Above the Clouds, back home for a special one-night-only screening at Tempe Pollack Cinemas on April 12th at 7 PM. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Labadie, lead actress Kahyun Kim, and director Jon Hill.
Above the Clouds is a heartfelt Asian-led romantic comedy starring Kahyun Kim (St. Denis Medical, Cocaine Bear) and Chris Labadie (Walker, Split Lip), written and directed by Emmy Award-winner Jon Hill. The film follows Jay, who returns to Los Angeles after the death of his father and finds unexpected guidance from a stranger. Described as “Past Lives meets Before Sunset,” the story explores loss, identity, and human connection in a charming yet emotionally resonant narrative.
The film boasts a standout supporting cast including Matty Cardarople (Stranger Things, Reservation Dogs), Mary Holland (Happiest Season, Veep), and Aria Song (Yellowstone, Seal Team). It has garnered critical acclaim, winning Best Cinematography at the Asian Film Festival, Best Independent Film and Best Actress at the Hollywood Reel Independent Film Festival, and another Best Actress award for Kahyun Kim at the Marina Del Rey Film Festival.
“Above The Clouds is a cute comedy with a solid dramatic throughline that makes the ending land perfectly,” said Bobby LePire of Film Threat. “The cast’s strong, and the plot takes a few unexpected but delightful turns. This is a promising debut that hits all the right emotional beats.”
Tickets for the Tempe screening are available now and expected to sell out, as they did during both the premiere and encore screenings in Hollywood. Don’t miss the chance to experience this touching and humorous film with the creators in attendance.
