Sony has officially dropped the trailer for 28 Years Later, the long-awaited continuation of the 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later saga. The iconic Danny Boyle returns to direct, reuniting with writer Alex Garland for the franchise’s next chapter.
Scheduled to hit theaters on June 20, 2025, 28 Years Later also marks the start of an ambitious new trilogy. The story picks up nearly 30 years after the rage virus was unleashed from a biological weapons lab. In a world still under strict quarantine, a group of survivors has found refuge on a remote island, protected by a single, heavily fortified causeway. When one member embarks on a daring journey to the mainland, they uncover chilling secrets, mutated horrors, and unexpected truths about both the infected and other survivors.
Reports indicate that the first two films in this new trilogy are already complete. Danny Boyle directs the inaugural installment, while Nia DaCosta (Candyman, The Marvels) has taken the helm for the second. Alex Garland, known for his work on 28 Days Later and Ex Machina, wrote the screenplay for the upcoming film. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original movie, is returning as an executive producer and is rumored to reprise his role.
The cast of 28 Years Later features an impressive lineup, including Jack O’Connell (Amy Winehouse: Back to Black), Jodie Comer (Killing Eve), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kraven the Hunter), Alfie Williams (His Dark Materials), and Ralph Fiennes (The Menu).
