As awards season progresses, the film and television industry gives everyone the opportunity to recognize excellence. On Sunday, it was the actors’ time to shine, as they stood in the spotlight.
The 2023 Screen Actors Guild Awards, available to watch for the first time on Netflix’s YouTube channel, presented the Actor trophies to the actors who excelled in movies and television series over the past year. Known to be a predictor of Oscar success, the SAG Awards were accurate in their predictions of winners in the acting categories in the prior year, with Lead Actor Will Smith, Lead Actress Jessica Chastain, Supporting Actor Troy Kotsur, and Supporting Actress Ariana Debose all taking home Oscars.
The multiversal adventure Everything Everywhere All at Once made history Sunday night, racking up a record-breaking four Actor wins from its five nominations. The film also won top honors from the Producers Guild Awards and Directors Guilds Awards, setting it up for future success. It was rewarded with the Best Ensemble statue, as well as trophies for Michelle Yeoh, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ke Huy Quan, who became the first Asian actor to win the Supporting Actor category. The Banshees of Inishirin, which had five nominations, failed to take home any awards. Brendan Fraser, on the other hand, was awarded Best Actor for his work in The Whale. This is the first time since 1998 that the four acting winners at the BAFTAs and the SAG Awards have been completely different, making the overall Oscar race more unpredictable.
After winning two awards at the Golden Globes, The White Lotus, the HBO comedy-drama series was awarded the Best Drama Series Ensemble trophy and Jennifer Coolidge was granted an Actor award. The other honors were spread among the other contenders, with Abbott Elementary taking home the Best Comedy Ensemble award and Ozark winning an Actor award for Jason Bateman. Jean Smart (Hacks) and Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) were also rewarded.
The SAG Awards is voted on by the SAG-AFTRA organization, which comprises of over 120,000 members. During the event, Sally Field was honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award.
