Well, look who’s back! Hot on the heels on the return of Crash Bandicoot is the return of another beloved mascot character from the original PlayStation era. Spyro the Dragon was first introduced to the masses in 1998 from developer Insomniac Games, creators of Ratchet & Clank, Sunset Overdrive, and the Resistance series. After spawning two sequels to the original PlayStation game, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Insomniac’s partnership with publisher Universal along with the original series was brought to an end. Various other titles in the Spyro series were created over the years, but we’re not here to talk about those, no. The original trilogy is back with a new, beautiful coat of paint, and a mission to wash the taste of Skylanders out of our collective mouths.
Spyro Reignited Trilogy was recently announced for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, releasing September 21, 2018, from developer Toys for Bob. The game will retail for $39.99 and includes the original three Spyro titles “remade from the ground up” and featuring “improved environments, updated controls, brand-new lighting and recreated cinematics” according to publisher Activision. I’d have to say I agree with the “improved” statement, the game looks absolutely wonderful and I can’t wait to dive in myself. As a bonus, Tom Kenny, the voice of Spyro from the latter two games will return to voice the titular character, and composer Stewart Copeland’s tracks are being retained and reimagined for the title.
It’s good to see you back, old friend.
