Just 48 hours ago, Valve, the overmind of Steam and creators of Half-Life, Portal, and many others, announced SteamOS. It is now “day two” of their week-long living room announcement extravaganza, and before us they have finally unveiled some more information on the Steam Box, or at least how you can get your hands on a prototype this year:
While these products are still in development, we need your help. As always, we believe the best way to ensure that the right products are getting made is to let people try them out and then make changes as we go. We have designed a high-performance prototype that’s optimized for gaming, for the living room, and for Steam. Of course, it’s also completely upgradable and open.
This year we’re shipping just 300 of these boxes to Steam users, free of charge, for testing. You can make yourself eligible to get one. How? Read on!
Head on over to the Steam Machine page and you can find out how you can get your hands on one of Valve’s 300 prototypes. This is of course not simply a giveaway, but an opportunity to help the company figure out what gamers actually want out of a living room PC.
For more information on this week’s announcements, check out the Steam Living Room page, and come back here Friday, September 27th at 10AM or so for the final announcement.
Fingers crossed that it’s Half Life 3! (It’s probably just the prototype controller for Steam Box, but hey, one can dream, right?
