5 Post-Apocalyptic Films You Haven’t Seen

5 Post-Apocalyptic Films

Most people are familiar with post-apocalyptic films like Resident Evil, I Am Legend, and The Book of Eli. So here is a list of 5 lesser known post-apocalyptic films that I think you need to add to your “must-see” list:

Stake Land (2010)

Think of the typical zombie movie and then replace the zombies with brainless, hungry vampires. This post-apocalyptic take on the vampire genre is somewhat of a diamond in the rough. It stars Connor Paola as Martin, a teenager who has just lost his entire family to vampires and Nick Damici as Mister, the no-holds-bar vampire hunter who saves him. Together they are on a trek north towards Canada where salvation is said to be. Stake Land breaks new ground with the vampire genre and stays as far away from the typical vampire film that Hollywood likes to portray.

Children of Men (2006)

The year is 2027 and all women in the world are now infertile. Well, all the women with the exception of one. Taking place in the United Kingdom, Clive Owen stars as Theo, a former activist who is asked by his estranged wife Julian (Julianne Moore) to escort the last pregnant woman to safety. War between the government and rebels surrounds every move that Theo makes as he carefully tries to hide the pregnant woman from those who want the baby for their own greed. If any one thing leaves a lasting impression on the viewer it has to be the incredibly long and marvelous takes. One such take lasts a little more than 7 minutes and has Theo running through an intense battle where bullets and explosions envelop his every step.

The Road (2009)

A simple yet remarkable story about a man and his son trying to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. Adapted from the 2006 Cormac MCarthy novel of the same name, Viggo Mortensen stars as a father who is trying to teach his son (Kodi Smit-McPhee) the rules for survival in the wasteland they now live in. There are outstanding performances throughout by a cast of A-Listers including Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, and an almost unrecognizable Robert Duvall. This is an unflinching, sometimes hard-to-watch tale of what humans might have to do in order to carry on in a world without hope.

Carriers (2009)

A group of friends are trying to escape a highly contagious virus that causes anyone that comes in contact with it to die. The story unfolds as brothers Brian (Chris Pine) and Danny (Lou Taylor Pucci) try to keep their group safe from numerous obstacles that they come in contact with along their route to possible salvation. Bobby (Piper Perabo) and Kate (Emily VanCamp) round out the female portion of the group and strive to help the brothers in any way that they can. The film is a realistic take on what could happen if this type of virus actually existed in our current world and what we would have to do in order to escape it.

Hell (2011)

In the year 2016 the sun’s temperature has increased to the point in which it rarely rains and food sources are incredibly scarce. Survivors must cover up almost every part of their body if they decide to go outside during the day and don’t wish to burn to death.  3 of these survivors are on their way to the mountains where it is believed that a better life may exist. This German film plays to its post-apocalyptic strengths and includes cannibals and violent nomads throughout. The entire film is in German so if you rent it on Blu-ray or DVD you can either watch it with subtitles or listen to it dubbed in English.

Just call me “Turbo” because it sums me up in a single word. I’m originally from Visalia, California but currently reside in Mesa, Arizona. I’m a movie and video game fanatic with a BA in Film and Media Production from ASU. I try to see every movie that I can (new and old) as well as play the latest video game releases. My goal in life would be to create a feature length film which viewers absolutely love. However, until then I love to entertain people with my 100+ voice impersonations as well as fill them in with the latest movie/ gaming news on Twitter. Facebook.com/turbizl, Twitter: @turbizl
