“Anna Karenina” Review

I’ve got to preface this review with an important piece of information about me: I have zero exposure to classic Russian literature. That being said, Anna Karenina is a very interesting movie. I can’t say too much about the story without giving a lot away (for those of you who may not have read the book, like me!), so I’ll simply say that the storyline was a bit…forgettable.

What isn’t at all forgettable is the look of the film. The cinematography, the costuming, the staging, the scenery, everything visual in this movie was amazing! I absolutely loved watching the film. It was a sumptuous feast for the eyes, and if you at all like visually interesting movies, then I’m thinking you’ll really like this one.

Though I found the story lacking, the actors were fantastic, and not just the lead players. All the supporting characters (who had more than one line, that is, and even some that didn’t!) really held their own and gave their character a unique personality. This movie didn’t star “Kiera Knightley and Jude Law and a bunch of people we hired off the street today,” each and every character was interesting and different. The movie felt much larger than it would have otherwise, to be so full of vibrant personalities, in addition to the vibrant visuals.

I think this movie would appeal to fans of any of the following:

  • Rich, vibrant and lavish visuals
  • Realistic portrayals of human emotion, on both personal and social levels
  • Fans of classic Russian Literature in general, or of Anna Karenina specifically

Not having read it, I cannot determine if fans of the book will be pleased with the movie, however, so keep that in mind.

But, in my ever-humble opinion, I’m giving Anna Karenina:

12 Hearts!

As an avid Jill-Of-All-Trades, I dabble in many things, but I've always been passionate about writing and photography. I read like a fiend, all sorts of genres and authors, and I hope someday to write my own novels. I've been taking pictures since I was little, and I strive to improve my skills everytime I pick up a camera. I love all kinds of movies, from those terrible-yet-hilarious B movies to the latest superhero blockbusters. I play video games, roleplaying games, even Magic: The Gathering (much to the chagrin of my wallet, at times), because I adore delving into these other, amazing, created worlds.
