What is the ALS ice bucket challenge all about?

“Ice bucket challenge” – you don’t even have to actually know what is to have a few shivers run down your back taking a guess.

In the past week, #IceBucketChallenge #StrikeOutALS has taken the internet by storm as everyone from teenagers to celebrities are helping to raise awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that eventually leads to death by degeneration.

The challenge? If you’re “tagged” by a friend, you either have to donate $100 to a good cause, or dumb a bucket of freezing ice water on your head, and then continue to pass the challenge on. It’s working – last year, the ALS Association raised about $250,000. This year, the donations have topped $15 million!

So not only are people donating to a fantastic cause, but it’s entertaining for all of us, too – chances are one of your favorite celebrities has already taken the challenge, or has been tagged to. Mark Sheppard, John Barrowman, Robert Downey Jr., Justin Timberlake, Chris Pratt, Taylor Swift, Jon Bon Jovi, Jim Parsons, Ashton Kutcher, Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Osric Chau, Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien – the list goes on and on.

Don’t forget to donate at www.alsa.org.
